The bride and groom at this wedding have a deep love for Turkey and it's rich history, craftsmanship and mostly it's architecture and wanted this to be the statement made in their reception(s) decor. Drawing from this, I immediately thought of the magnificent Islamic art and abundance of Arabic Calligraphy in tourist sites such as the Haga Sofia and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul and knew I had to find a way to incorporate calligraphy as the centerpiece to the stage. Thus began my search for the right vendor to not only draw the calligraphy portion but carve the bride and grooms name in Arabic with the authenticity, skill and craftsmanship the couple would see in a piece from Turkey itself. After much research, we decided on working with TDS Wood Carving for this project. They specialize in carved calligraphed Islamic art and many people may have had the pleasure of making his acquaintance at the ISNA or INA conventions. Brother Tahir was an absolute please to work with on this piece from start to finish and we look forward to working with him and his team again in the near future for other creative projects!
Here is a photo of the initial sketch, magic most certainly begins with an idea, and in my case involves some paper and a pen, sometimes even a napkin! This sketch was sent to us by the craftsman before they began their work.
This is an image of the completed carving, completely sanded and chiseled to perfection. You can imagine my excitement to see the finished product with the golden bronze glazed finish!
Here we have the finished product, set amongst these luxurious drapes in gold sequin, burgundy velvet and a few shades of red done in chiffon all set in front of a teal backdrop for that pop of color. We accented the stage with bronze colored lanterns and tribal wind chimes to add a bit more depth. Below are a few photos of the stage and centerpieces from this lavish Turkish reception!
